It can be a little confusing when using japanese currency for the first time so we have provided you with some images and information below about japanese bills and coins.

The left image shows a 10 yen coin, a 5 yen coin with a hole in the center of it, and a 1 yen coin on the right. Basically if you compare it to money from America or Canada you can think of it as 10 cents, 5 cents, and 1 cent. The 5 yen coin is considered a lucky coin in Japan and is commonly used when visiting shrines.

 

 

The left image shows a 500 yen coin, 100 yen coin and a 50 yen coin on the right. The 500 yen coin is basically equal to 5 dollars. The 100 yen coin is basically 1 dollar and the 50 yen coin is worth about 50 cents when compared to Amercian or Canadian money.
